There are many questions that need to be answered by the contractor to give you peace of mind and insure that you will get a quality job for a reasonable price.
First, you need to see verification of his insurance and bonding. Note: If he has an employee get injured on the job and he does not have insurance, you could be liable for the medical costs.
Ask him for references of previous projects gthat you can check out to see the quality of his work.
Find out his contact information. If he does not have a physical address, you may have trouble getting in contact with him once he starts the project for you.
Ask him how he handles changes. There may be a problem getting a certain material such as kitchen cabinets or door styles. you may change your mind about how you wanted a wall moved after the project was started.
Make sure that he is going to taske care of the cleanup and waste removal as the project is being done and not just at the end. Some areas will not allow the old materials to be left laying around and if somebody got hurt such as stepping on a rusty nail, you would be liable.
